Dear families and friends of Room 104,
This school year had an unexpected turn of events in the first week with the passing of my father and my leave in the second week to assist with the funeral. Special thanks to the classroom for your kind thoughts, prayers, drawings, poems, and patience in my absence. It was a welcoming sight to be back at Coral Reef Montessori and hear about the events that happened in the first full week together. In the next few weeks we look forward to growing together as a community as well as understanding more about the wonderful materials available during our classroom work time.
The classroom has a different set-up from last year and returning children have been adjusting to the Sensorial area arrangement as well as the lunch area change. Now that are fish are back from their summer vacation, we gave them a sunnier spot with more plants on the windowsill. New friends have been observing and growing a stronger understanding of the ground rules while returning friends have shared their enthusiasm for favorite works.
In our classroom, we have materials that have special purposes and uses. Although there are many materials, each material is arranged as an individual work. Some works may be used together, (as there is an obvious relationship with many works), but most are presented with a focus in isolating a specific skill. With our multi-age setting, children often present works to other children, but only if they have truly mastered the use of the material. For example, if a child wishes to show another child how to tie shoelaces, he or she must already have this skill. With purpose, concentration and the appropriate coordination, the child can work independently to achieve mastery through his/her own efforts.
More can be learned about the Montessori approach to education during our classroom’s Open House this Wednesday, September 14th at 6:00 PM in Room 104. As space is limited, we ask that only parents and primary care givers attend. You will also learn more about the daily events and areas of the classroom, the specifics of working within the public education system, and how to communicate with us during the school year.
Thank you for your support and best wishes for a wonderful school year!
Ms. Joanna Boone
