Dear families of room 104,
After the passing of tropical storm Isaac, we started school on Tuesday with a lot of energy and a large group meeting. Many students wanted to share about what they did over the long weekend, such as playing board games with family and extended family.
On Tuesday we received new fish for our aquarium as well as a new filter, food, aquarium stones, and sunken objects. We enjoyed watching the fish and feeding them everyday with just a pinch of fish food. Although the smell of the food is not so appetizing the fish seem to really enjoy it.
During the week we continued to emphasize taking one work out at a time for ourselves. New older students enjoyed playing the exchange game and returning students enjoyed showing other works to the new students. At group times, we sang many of our favorite songs such as, “Down the road”, and “The Swim”.
Today we started our morning with a birthday celebration. Birthdays are celebrated through sharing a personal timeline of the child’s life. We keep the timelines in the classroom so that returning students may add one page for each additional birthday. If you have not seen a birthday celebration or would like to know more about the timelines and celebrations, please see me after school or e-mail me at [email protected].
Today is also the birthday of Maria Montessori. We shared a story about Maria Montessori in the afternoon and several children drew pictures of what it looks like in our classroom. We learned that Dr. Montessori was one of the first female doctors in Italy, and that she trained teachers and established schools in many parts of the world. We also saw a picture of Alexander Graham Bell and his first telephone. Both he and Thomas Edison met with Maria Montessori when she came to the USA in 1913.
Next week we will meet again on Tuesday, as Monday is Labor Day. We hope that you have a long and restful weekend and we look forward to seeing you next week.
Kind regards,
Ms. Joanna Boone
