Dear families of room 104,
Although it has been a few weeks since we’ve returned from the Spring Break, our classroom schedule has been very different for the first few weeks of April. Even though we are a Montessori school and we focus on each child’s individual development, we are also a public school. With this we are required to assess and test our kindergarten students through SAT testing. Our kindergarten students practiced taking the test on the first Wednesday of April. The following Tuesday and Wednesday all kindergarten students took the SAT language and math assessments.
For parents, please keep in mind that the standardized test may indicate general abilities in math or language, but the best assessment of your child’s capabilities comes from observing the work that they show you.
During the days that the kindergarten children tested the younger children went to the main library and Miami Children’s Museum. For the following 5 school days all Primary classrooms were on field trips to the following locations: Evelyn Greer Park, The Little Farm, Miami Zoo, Pinecrest Gardens, and Bounce play zone. Although the trips were well enjoyed, we were all quite happy to be back in our own classroom last Thursday.
Since returning to school, we have been looking at the continent of Oceania. Even though it is the smallest continent, it has some of the most unique animals life found on any of the planets. We have been enjoying the varied stories by Australian writer Mem Fox. If you are not familiar with her stories, I suggest that you listen to her reading a few of her own stories by YouTube such as “Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge” or “Hattie and the Fox”.

In our final month of school we will be busy with Mother’s Day brunch, Father’s Day brunch, water day, and graduation. We will also be celebrating any summer birthdays before the end of school. If your child has a summer birthday please stop by the classroom and schedule a date for the birthday timeline.
Have a wonderful week,
Ms. Joanna Boone
